Happy Sunday! I hope you are well during these difficult times.
Those of you who follow me on Instagram may have seen my quiet announcement that I am prepping for a 10K :-0! Yes, that's right on Sunday, September 13 I will be joining colleagues from Saint Luke's Health System and from around the city in the Plaza 10K Run/Walk. The race starts at 730 am at the Country Club Plaza.
Now, I am not a runner...anymore. In high school I was a sprinter. I ran everything up to the 800 m. My memories of running anything longer than 800 m are painful flashbacks of trying to keep up with the cross country team during the offseason. Brush burns from my thighs rubbing together in the heat. GI side effects as I learned how to eat and hydrate before embarking on a longer run. Those were the good old days (LOL!). I ran a little in college and then there was a long hiatus during medical school. I attempted to resume my running career as a resident and managed to tear my left achilles (complete tear requiring surgical intervention). I credit a great surgical and rehab team at UPMC with getting me back on my feet and in the gym again in 4 months. Since then I have dabbled a little with running on the treadmill but nothing structured and definitely no sprinting.
And then came 2020 and COVID-19. When the gyms closed I had to find an alternative way to be physically active. My new home gym was built from bands in the stairwell of my apartment building. But what about cardio? The first few weeks at home I walked/jogged the stairwells which was fun. Then I ventured out to the parking garage and began to walk the five levels of the parking structure. Every now and then I would add a little jog. My jogging intervals lengthened over time and I realized that maybe running wasn't so bad after all.
Two weeks ago I officially began to train for the 10K. I am using the 10K Runner, Couch to 10K Run app (available on iPhone and Android) and slowly making progress. Will I be the first to the finish line? Nope!! My goal is to complete the race, have fun, be safe and along the way encourage others to run/walk this journey with me.

This is an opportunity for me to give back and to encourage some of you to support the event.
Over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you my C210K journey. I have managed to graduate out of the parking garage and will share with you my learnings as I prep for the race.
