DIY Home Made Lotion with Shea Butter and Essential Oils

I have tried to recreate the recipe that I use for my home made lotion with Shea Butter. I have one disclaimer to make at the outset. While I do use measuring cups, I sometimes add a little more here or there to ensure that the consistency and/or scent are what I want. You can substitute any natural butters/oils in this recipe that you want. This is what works well for me and keeps my skin incredibly moist. One important tip: it is much less expensive than buying whipped products off the shelf.

Ingredients

1/2 cup shea butter

1/2 cup coconut butter

1/4 cup almond oil

1/4 cup vitamin E oil

10-15 drops your favorite essential oils (I have used Zum oil, tea tree oil, rosemary, lavender....choose the scent that best suits you)

Instructions

  1. Combine the solid butters in a microwave safe bowl

  2. Microwave at 50% in 30 second increments until the butters start to soften and then for another 10 - 15 seconds after they liquify

  3. Add the almond oil and essential oils

  4. Mix well

  5. Transfer into a freezer safe mixing bowl

  6. Place in freezer until oils start to re-solidify. Do not allow them to harden.

  7. Remove from freezer and beat with a hand mixer or stand mixer. Continue mixing until the oils develop soft peaks (it will look a little like whipped cream)

  8. Transfer to a air tight storage container. Note the date on the container (just a habit so you know how long your products last)

  • This recipe lasts about 6 months for me and I use it regularly. You don't need to use a lot. If you don't like to feel a little oily you won't like this recipe.

Products

Just as a funny aside. It was nice and warm on my patio today so instead of melting the butters in the microwave I set them outside for a few hours. All natural :-)
